Natural vs. Refined Sugars: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to sugar, not all forms are created equal. Natural sugars come from unrefined sources and have been consumed by humans for thousands of years. Refined sugars, on the other hand, are highly processed and stripped of most health benefits.

Natural Sugars

Natural sugar sources include fruits, vegetables, honey, and some grains such as barley and wheat. Each of these sources brings different benefits to the table, including vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. Natural sugars are slowly released into the bloodstream, providing a steady source of energy without the “sugar crash” associated with refined sugar consumption.

Refined Sugars

Refined sugar is derived from sugar cane or sugar beets and goes through an extensive refining process before it hits the shelves. During this process, the sugar is stripped of its natural minerals and vitamins and loses many of its nutritional benefits. Refined sugars are quickly absorbed by the body, causing a rapid increase in blood sugar levels followed by a crash.

Why natural sugars are better for you

When it comes to making healthy nutrition choices, natural sugars are a better option than refined sugars. Natural sugars provide essential nutrients and vitamins, while refined sugar is a highly processed additive with little nutritional value. Eating more whole fruit and vegetables instead of sugary snacks or drinks will help you get the most out of your diet.
